Gubbio

It is the most medieval city in Umbria because of its buildings, streets, and architecture that preserve the typical medieval mood of Middle Ages and contribute to create a truly unique atmosphere.

These are: the Cathedral, where are the works of the greatest artists of Gubbio date back to 15th ? century; the wonderful Piazza Grande that houses the Palazzo dei Consoli and that is the symbol of the city. The square is in Gothic style and reflects the importance of Gubbio in the Middle Ages. In the Civic Museum of the Palazzo dei Consoli the seven “Eugubine Tables” are housed, a fundamental document of the ancient Umbrian people, dating back to the 3rd and 2nd century B.C.
The house of St. Ubaldo and the Basilica of St. Ubaldo make Gubbio a unique town: the first one is an ancient tower where the saint patron of Gubbio lived between the year 200 and 300; the latter is situated on the top of Mount Ingino (908 meters above sea level) and hosts the remains of the saint and the famous “Ceri” (Statues of the saints).

The “Festa dei Ceri” is a religious celebration held in Gubbio on May 15th of each year and is undoubtedly one of the most famous historical celebrations in the world. It consists of a crazy race during which the citizens carry on their shoulder the heavy statues to the top of Mount Ingino. The event is filled with emotions and passion animating the crowd that follows and incites the “ceraioli” to run.

“I ceri” are three huge wooden structures about 4 tons each, surmounted by the statues of St. Ubaldo, St. George and St. Anthony. This race is one of the most singular religious events in the world.
