Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is the largest in central Italy and the fourth of Italy.
It has three islands: Isola Maggiore, Isola Minore and Isola Polvese.

It is a navigable lake and there’s a ferry boat which starts from the town of Passignano and links the banks of the lake with the three islands and other coastal resorts. These are eight interesting places regarding environment, history and art, which are: Magione, Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve (which is the birthplace of the painter Perugino), Paciano, Panicale, Piegaro, Tuoro sul Trasimeno (historically important for the battle between Rome and Carthage, led and won by Hannibal).

Finally Passignano is the main town of the lake area because it offers bathing resorts and connections to other lake villages which make it an attractive place.
The lake is an important ecological site, thanks to its clean environment that offers the tourist an opportunity for relax and rest.

The best choice for the traveller is therefore staying in the green and medieval Perugia, because it is just a few minutes away by car or train (with good connections) from Lake Trasimeno.

The little towns around the lake are famous for handicraft (in particular lace and embroidery) and also for gastronomy: the main dish is the lake fish – carp, perch, tench and “Latterino”, this latter prepared according to an old recipe called “Tegamaccio”.
