Recently Umbria received an important recognition by the American magazine “Wine Enthusiast”. This magazine in 2014 indicated our region as one of the worldwide top ten “Best Wine Travel Destinations”.
Now Umbria is the only Italian region to appear in this international ranking thanks to its wines and thanks to the richness of its territory, its historical and artistic heritage and its particular gastronomy .
Umbria is therefore a destination to choose for a trip and a tasty getaway that one can pass visiting Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Montefalco,Todi and Torgiano.
Among the wines that deserve a special recognition we can mention:
“Torgiano Rosso Riserva”, an unmistakable wine made from Sangiovese grape, characterized by a ruby red color and a full-bodied taste; “Sagrantino di Montefalco”, one of the most typical Umbrian wines and one of the most prestigious of Italy. It comes from the exclusive “Sagrantino – vine” and has medieval origins ; the Colli Perugini wine, made from Sangiovese grape, characterized by a full-bodied and dry taste; Orvietano Red wine, produced with Canaiolo grapes, it is recognizable from a ruby red color and a harmonious flavor. Umbrian red wine has undoubtly a full-bodied and tannic taste, it matches with strong flavors and dishes such as cold cuts, cheeses, meats, especially hunting game and pork .
Beside these red wines the white ones are equally important: worths to mention are the Umbrian whites coming from Torgiano, Orvieto, Upper Tiber, the Trasimeno Lake and Colli Martani obtained through Trebbiano and Grechetto grapes which give them a very special flavour, a fresh citrus and wildflowers scent and a fruity fresh taste on the palate .
Some evenst named “Open Cellars ” (on the last Sunday of May) and “Calici di stelle” (Goblets of stars – on mid- August ) are special initiatives just dedicated to wine lovers .

We are here also to recommend to our guests visits to the multitude of wineries present in the charming Umbrian countryside.
One of our main suggestions to those guests who rent our charming residences in villa in Perugia is to taste a glass of good Umbrian red wine, maybe lying under the gazebos at the poolside in salt water, surrounded by olive trees and green hills without any thoughts, in order to enjoy Umbria in a total relaxation .
The wine coupling with typical Umbrian dishes enhances the taste of both drink and food and permits to appreciate all their individual organoleptic qualities.
The main feature of Umbrian cuisine is its simplicity, because the basis of its ingredients are seasonal products such as mushrooms, asparagus and wild fruits of the earth, such as black and white truffle coming from Gubbio and Città di Castello. Legumes and cereals enrich the dishes based on meat, mostly lamb, pork and game, both to be cooked on a spit and worked for the preparation of sausages. (Famous all over the world the ham and the salami from Norcia).
The most weel-known Umbrian first courses are strangozzi with black truffles, umbricelli in the famous Trasimeno sauce , pappardelle in hare sauce , noodles in duck sauce and porcini mushrooms. Among the second courses worth to mention are roast lamb, pork on the grill and the “Perugino” bull as well as tasty and traditional recipes for cooking venison.
Legumes, cereals and vegetables are often combined with these traditional dishes, among these the most famous are: the fagiolina of the Trasimeno Lake, the Cannara onion and the black celery from Trevi, all these seasoned and flavored with extra virgin olive oil that is produced in various areas of Umbria such as Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto and in the area of Trevi.
Among the desserts the Ciaramicola, the Torciglione, the Torcolo of San Costanzo, the Rocciata of Assisi, the San Giuseppe fritters are remembered to be part of the traditional Umbrian cuisine, they still today preserve their ancient ingredients and unique flavors.
Finally, the chocolate was, and still is, the basic product of the culinary tradition that is identified in the Bacio Perugina, a praline made with hazelnuts and dark chocolate.
The Bacio Perugina praline is the most authentic in the city of Perugia. This chocolate is worldwide a symbol of the city and of Italy in general. Just inside the Perugina factory, born in 1907, there’s a museum of chocolate where the story of Bacio Perugina is told.
All these things such as wines among the most famous in Italy, meats, cheeses, truffles, cold cuts and fresh pastries will be necessarily one of the most valuable part of your travel to Umbria.
